Eurosatory 2014: Andre Forkert's Impressions from the Show

DAction Camera for SOF

MOHAC is the first camera especially developed for the needs of Special Operation Forces (SOF), other sport or action cameras aren’t designed for military operations. Their large size and awkward shape hinder movement and create dangerous snag hazards, they fail under the rigors of combat, and their difficult to operate e.g. with gloves. MOHAC from RAPID is the first military-optimized helmet camera. It delivers the smallest, lightest, simplest and toughest ruggedizes camera solution available. The camera is in their final testing phase and series production will be by the end of this year. With its curved profile it matches the shape of the helmets and creates the closest possible fit. It is IP68 (3 m for 30 min. under water) ruggedized and controlled by a single button (Off, Photo or video with internal microphone). MOHAC offers up to 1080p HD video or 12 MP photo quality and can be remote controlled. Even an App is available for the control via cell phone. Vibrations as a tactical feedback allow the control even in absolute darkness. Two batteries (CR123) and a (secure) 64 GB card allow the use for up to six hours.

GDELS show a great portfolio – now even with AATVs and Quads

General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) presents at Eurosatory a whole number of new vehicles. Here they show for the first time ever the new PIRHANA 3+, the ASCOD, the ATTV (50 are ordered for NLS SOF) and a Quad. The ASCOD is available in two versions – a 35 t and 42 t. This vehicle offers an affordable solution benefit by being part of the common bas platform approach of GDELS. Many parts are already used in other GDELS vehicles worldwide and combat proven. The new main features include increased protection capabilities, high mobility, improved comfort (with a rubber track), mine protection according to STANAG 4569, a high payload and growth capabilities. The ASCOD is in service in Spain and Austria and the latest version was chosen by the UK MoD for the Specialist Vehicle (SV) program and is also in competition in Denmark.

The PIRANHA 3+ moved up with its GVW to 27 t and host a crew of three with seats for additional nine infantry soldiers. At Eurosatory it is shown as an APC configuration with a Kongsberg 12,7 mm Protector Weapon Station. The PIRANHA 3+ offers a complete modular protection system, 30% more engine power (engine from Steyr Motors GmbH), either a conventional or a hydropneumatic suspension system, top speed of 110 km/h and a range of 1,000+ km.

For SOF and super light mobility solutions GDELS in cooperation with DEFENTURE from Nederland presents its wheeled portfolio of light tactical vehicles in a weight class less than 5 tons. The ATTV and quad will set up a new family of vehicles, internally transportable in tactical helicopters. The four wheeled steered diesel (multi fuel) Quad has a fully automatic transmission and can be operated with one hand, offers 650 kg payload (GVW 1,180 kg), max. speed of 100 km/h and 54 hp. At the front and rear it can transport one stretcher each.

The Netherlands ordered 50 of the ATTV for their SOF, first delivery will be from September on. They are produced in cooperation with DEFENTURE from the Netherlands and provides unmatched cross-country performance due to its racing suspension system stemming from Paris-Dakar Rally car engineering. The top ring mount can operated up to 50. cal weapons. The ATTV has a payload of 2,250 kg (GVW 4.5 t), max. speed of 170 km/h and 220 hp.

European premier of SHADOW M2

TEXTRON Systems is showing its UAV SHADOW M2 for the first time in Europe. It is designed with a multi-mission payload capability, a weather-resistant fuselage and increased endurance, reliability and performance. But with the same footprint and logistics of the RQ-7B SHADOW. It offer a gimbal and two underwing boys for EO/IR sensors, laser designator, synthetic-aperture radar, SIGINT or CBRN detection. Satellite communications is available as an option.
