I/ITSEC 2015: Modernisation of 18 Canadian LEOPARD Gunnery Skills Trainer (LGST) Simulators to VBS3

The Simulation & Training business unit of Rheinmetall Defence Electronics recently integrated the game engine-based visualisation software Virtual Battlespace (VBS) 3 into a high-performance simulation system. Combining a full-fledged computer generated forces system and serious gaming technology, this configuration brings together the best of both worlds, assuring a highly realistic training experience.

This achievement took place during modernisation of 18 LEOPARD Gunnery Skills Trainer (LGST) simulators for the Canadian Armed Forces, which Rheinmetall finished upgrading from VBS 2 to VBS 3 in November 2015, at the request of the Canadian Armed Forces. The Canadian Army’s LGSTs were developed based on Rheinmetall’s long-standing experience in design and manufacturing of gunnery and combat simulators for the LEOPARD MBT and other platforms. The core of these simulators consists of the powerful tactical simulation system TacSi Reloaded and the latest DISI Xtreme visual system, which meets the highest requirements in terms of performance, realism and interoperability.

Rheinmetall understands that its future strategy needs to be shaped in close co-operation with its customers,” Ulrich Sasse, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Defence Electronics, President, Simulation and Training Division, explained to MT. “In an uncertain world, customers need a reliable partner for supplying training solutions that assure excellent performance by soldiers, airmen and sailors when it matters most. At the same time, Rheinmetall is committed to thinking ahead, anticipating future security scenarios and enabling customers to contend effectively with emerging threats and mission requirements.”

The Canadian military have long placed their trust in simulation technology from Rheinmetall. Besides the 18 LGST systems, since March 2013 two Driver Station Simulators (DSS) have been in service. Further gunnery and combat simulators – also featuring VBS3 – will soon be ready to help the Indonesian Armed Forces train their LEOPARD 2 tank crews.

Rheinmetall is showcasing its expertise on booth 2601 at I/ITSEC.
