FIDAE 2014: ATK Showcasing Innovation for the South American Market

ATK understands that there is a desire for transfers of technology that will help bolster sovereign defence capabilities. Through its co-production programme, ATK can assist allied governments with the capabilities necessary to meet both near term requirements and long term expectations for internal defence manufacturing requirements. As a leading developer and producer of small, medium and large calibre ammunition, as well as medium calibre cannons for the US military, ATK can provide a key role in creating and sustaining the infrastructure necessary to develop and maintain a sovereign defence manufacturing capability as a key component of a sound national defence and security strategy. Additionally, ATK’s co-production programmes can develop, maintain and adapt to the conditions for future growth that are necessary to create a viable manufacturing complex owned and operated by US allied nations.

ATK’s long history of ammunition and co-production experience provides allied partners the resources necessary to either create an entirely new production capability or enhance existing facilities to enable increased production capacity, greater efficiency and profitability as well as product line expansions. ATK’s co-production experience benefits the customer who desires a world-class capability through providing the shortest path to fully indigenous operations using a staged approach that rapidly establishes or increases production efficiencies while maintaining operational budgets.

As permissible by the US government, ATK is able to provide specific transfers of technology and/or kits made up of components that are ready for assembly. As an example, for ammunition production, these kits could include primers, fuzing, projectiles and warheads leaving the gaining organisation the ability to manufacture ammunition by assembling the final rounds through using their indigenous cartridge case and propellant capabilities that already exist. Another example where ATK can help allies grow their capabilities is through providing services to evaluate their existing infrastructure and facilities and then provide plans that will help increase efficiencies. Other areas of ATK expertise include: Facility maintenance and management, facility expansion to include the production facility as well as test capabilities for development and acceptance requirements. Similar capabilities could also be applied to guns manufacturing where ‘kits’ are provided for final assembly or existing infrastructure is surveyed and services are offered to expand sovereign capabilities.
The GAU-23 BUSHMASTER Automatic Cannon is a next-generation Chain Gun weapon available and in use today. It continues the BUSHMASTER tradition of excellence with its design simplicity, external power, positive round control, ease of maintenance, and constant velocity ammunition feed. It incorporates all of the battle-proven features of the 25mm M242 and Mk44 Bushmaster cannons, with significant system commonality for low risk, proven performance. (Photo: ATK)

In conjunction with its decades-long lineage of delivering world-class products to US and allied forces worldwide, ATK also is a preferred provider for a full range of product-lifecycle support services including fully customisable programmes for integrated logistics, OEM-quality spares, training, field service support, repair, and remanufacturing capabilities for its entire line of BUSHMASTER Chain Gun and Automatic Cannons. As a value-added service, ATK will set up warranties and aftermarket services at the time of sale or as an enhanced offering to those who already have an installed base of ATK cannons. Additionally, ATK is capable of providing the same offerings for non-ATK medium calibre cannons worldwide.

Furthermore, ATK is releasing its Acoustic Hostile Fire Detection System, which provides detection of small caliber ball and tracer rounds, anti-aircraft artillery, unguided rockets, and rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) at the show. The system is light-weight and easy to install and has multiple display options. The acoustic sensor can be used as a stand-alone Hostile Fire detection system or in conjunction with other Threat Warning Systems to provide a complete threat awareness capability. ATK’s SHOTFINDER uses a single, 12in diameter, 1/2in high ‘pancake’ sensor mounted flush on the belly of the aircraft. The system has a nearly zero False Indication Rate (FIR) with approximately a 95% Probability of Indication (Pi). When combined with an electro-optical (EO) MWS, SHOTFINDER can refine the determination of threat angle of origin, range, and shooter geo-location. The system detects small calibre ball and tracer rounds, anti-aircraft artillery, unguided rockets, and rocket propelled grenades.

ATK’s AN/AAR-47 Missile Warning System is an electronic warfare system designed to protect aircraft against IR guided missile threats, laser-guided / laser-aided threats and unguided munitions. Upon detection of the threat, the system will provide an audio and visual sector warning to the pilot. For IR missile threats, the system automatically Multi-Threat Detection: Missile, Laser, and Hostile Fire initiates countermeasures by sending a command signal to the Countermeasures Dispensing Set.

The Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile (AGM-88E; or AARGM) provides the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and Italian Air Force the latest and most advanced weapon system for engaging and destroying enemy air defenses and time-critical, mobile targets. AARGM is a supersonic, medium-range, air-launched tactical missile compatible with U.S. and allied strike aircraft, including all variants of the F/A-18, TORNADO, EA-18G, F-16, EA-6B, and F-35 (external).

AARGM is a supersonic, medium-range, air-launched tactical missile compatible with US and allied strike aircraft. Designed to upgrade the High-Speed Anti Radiation Missile (HARM) (AGM-88) system, AARGM features an advanced digital anti radiation homing (ARH) sensor, millimetre wave (MMW)-radar terminal seeker, precise Global Positioning System (GPS)/Inertial Navigation System (INS) guidance, net-centric connectivity, and Weapon Impact Assessment (WIA) transmit.
