Rheinmetall at FIDAE 2014 exhibits a representative selection of its diverse array of products for military and security forces. Building on a proud tradition, the Düsseldorf, Germany-based Rheinmetall Group covers many different capability categories.

Two combat vehicles that have proven indispensable in recent decades are the LEOPARD main battle tank (MBT) and the MARDER infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). Combining its proven competence in land systems with its expertise as a systems integrator, Rheinmetall is able to modify legacy systems to make them more than a match for current challenges and threats. The group also offers lifecycle support for land systems.

Rheinmetall has specialised for many years in developing and producing high-quality components and innovative systems for protecting people, vehicles, aircraft, ships and installations, and offers a wide range of highly effective active, passive and soft-kill protection solutions. Thanks to its LEOPARD 2 expertise, Rheinmetall is able to offer combat-proven protection solutions for this main battle tank, which is one of the world’s leading combat systems. Moreover, as a systems supplier, Rheinmetall makes made-to-measure protection solutions for every type of platform. A growing customer base attests to Rheinmetall’s experience and competence in this field. At FIDAE 2014 the Düsseldorf, Germany-based Group is displaying a selection of its state-of-the-art systems and solutions for force protection.

Rheinmetall Chempro supplies add-on armour and spall liners, as well as anti-mine seats which are decoupled from the vehicle floor. These features provide the crew with reliable protection from RPG attacks, APFDS-T rounds, anti-tank guided missiles with a tandem shaped charge, and landmines. All of these protection components are in series production and combat proven. They can be retrofitted into existing systems without impairing the vehicle’s mobility.

Proven and in series production, the Active Defence System (ADS) is the world’s most advanced and effective standoff hard-kill system for protecting military vehicles in practically every weight class from operational threats. The sensor system detects incoming projectiles such as shaped charge warheads or antitank guided missiles. In a matter of microseconds, the system activates a protective sector and neutralises the incoming object by means of a countermeasure immediately before it reaches its target. Because it operates in a downward direction, ADS is one of the only high performance close-quarters protection systems that minimises collateral damage in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle.

The MASKE 66/76mm is a combat-proven IR smoke screening grenade that significantly reduces the accuracy of enemy fire by interrupting the line of sight (LOS) in the visible and infrared wavebands. It protects vehicles from visual and IR observation as well as from sensor-guided weapons, including laser beam-riders, laser illuminators and laser rangefinders.

Aerial attacks continue to pose a major threat to troop concentrations, military bases, civilian population centres and critical civilian infrastructure. Today, over 40 nations place their trust in Rheinmetall’s antiaircraft and air defence expertise.

In the domain of cannon-based air defence technology, Rheinmetall is a global leader and the sole single-source supplier of battle management systems, fire control systems, automatic cannon, integrated missile launchers and Ahead airburst ammunition. Its core competencies include the development and manufacture of complete air defence systems as well as simulators and training equipment.

As a performance-driven global player, Rheinmetall has unique expertise and innovative strength in armour, artillery, air defence, medium calibre, mortar and infantry ammunition and systems.

Rheinmetall’s supplies the world’s Armed Forces with customised services and an unparalleled range of products that includes environment-friendly and insensitive ammunition as well as state-of-the-art effectors. Prominent examples are the Group’s extensive portfolio of 40mm ammunition, the new family of insensitive 60mm mortar rounds, medium-calibre Ahead airburst ammunition, 105mm and 155mm artillery ammunition and propulsion systems and, last but not least, programmable 120mm tank rounds that are fully compatible with Rheinmetall’s 120mm smoothbore gun, which of course serves as the main armament of the LEOPARD 2 and M1A1 ABRAMS main battle tanks in service with many armed forces worldwide.

Two state-of-the-art system solutions, HEROLD and HEROLD Navy, are on display at FIDAE 2014. HEROLD and HEROLD Navy are electro-optical surveillance and fire control systems which assure continuous 360° surveillance, detection, alerting and simultaneous tracking of more than 256 moving ground/surface and airborne objects. HEROLD Navy is fine-tuned for use on naval vessels. The combined key capabilities of the HEROLD (land) and HEROLD Navy (sea) system solutions enable the operator to constantly generate and maintain the optimum situational awareness.
Visitors to FIDAE 2014 can also learn more about Rheinmetall’s Persistent Surveillance System (PSS). This modular and scalable system can easily be configured to meet specific needs, with future growth potential when customer requirements change. It comprises two separately available systems: the Persistent Surveillance Aerostat (PSA) and the Persistent Surveillance Tower (PST). The PSA consists of a stabilized electro-optical sensor system attached to an aerostat and tethered at altitudes of up to 300 metres, providing extended range surveillance capabilities of up to 20 km. The PST has a stabilized electro-optical sensor system and optional ground radars installed on a trailer-mounted mast that can be raised up to 32 metres in height. It provides surveillance capabilities at ranges of up to 10km in all weather conditions.

A key tool for network-enabled operations is Rheinmetall’s Sensor Command and Control Planning Suite, or SC2PS. The Sensor Command and Control Planning Suite is a real-time, multi-sensor application for exploiting data from soldier systems, ground-based sensor sources, tactical aerostats and UAVs. SC2PS gives commanders a powerful tool for sensor mission planning, post-mission analysis, reporting and decision-making. SC2PS data is both Multilateral Interoperability Program (MIP) compliant and Coalition Shared Data (CSD) compatible. Among other things, SC2PS is used by the military to simplify the planning of sensor deployments for optimizing sensor performance and coverage.
